BIO Stephanie is a singer, songwriter, grad student, and mother of two. As a singer, she trained with famed opera diva Luba Tcheresky. She is a graduate of Syracuse University, where she majored in that oh-so-marketable discipline, musical theatre. After a brief sojourn as a musical theatre performer -- you might remember her as the French chanteuse at Busch Gardens...but probably not -- she picked up her acoustic guitar and became a folkie. This phase was mercifully short. Next, she fronted the trip-hop band VDisc. She would belt out vibrant melodies and then dance during the twenty-minute guitar solos. VDisc released an album called Vee Khan Nez Pha, which is still available, although supplies are limited to the many boxes in various band members' basement. Having written a few pop songs, Stephanie then joined forces with Craig Randall at Brass Giraffe. Under his guidance, she released an eponymous EP featuring three songs: "Susan," "Sweet on You," and "Cab Driver." This last ditty, in various incarnations, would be her signature piece for the next decade. After the EP, she took up with the Davids -- Wilson on bass, Silva on drums -- and recorded a full-length CD, Cinderella's Dead. This album garnered praise from musical cogniscente, who flocked to her shows at the C-Note, Brownie's, and other rock clubs that no longer exist. Cinderella's Dead featured the hits "Mecca", "Brown", and the women's lib anthem "Beaver Dam". While playing with the Two Davids, she began a musical collaboration with One David -- David First, the avant garde composer, Notekillers wunderkind, and her erstwhile guitar teacher. Under the name Lazy Eyes, they released an album with the mouthful of a title Tokyo Could Not Be Open Because Tokyo Could Not Be Found. When they could be bothered to listen, critics recoiled from Tokyo in horror. This clearly means it's incredibly brilliant, the cover of Joni Mitchell's "Eastern Rain" being Exhibit A. Meanwhile, David Silva quit the band to go to law school (A drummer in law school! Cue: rimshot!), to be replaced by yet another David, Ross. Also joining the band was Michael Preston, late of the soul/funk outfit Shagg (Michael's middle name? You guessed it: David!). Kim Winter and Michele Kantor, aka the Mimettes, provided stunning backing vocals and additional eye candy. The new lineup was called MIMI FEROCIOUS, and went on to record an awesome album, 250 Times Sweeter Than Sugar, featuring the hits "Jonathan," "Chariot," and the cover of "I Feel Love" that those Venus Hum copycats appropriated. MIMI is in semi-retirement, as too many of its members have had children to allow for proper touring. Although Ozzy took his kids on the road, and they turned out OK. Stephanie has been with her husband Greg Olear, the novelist/astrologer/web designer and author of this biography, for seven years. They live in Highland/New Paltz with their two children, Dominick and Prudence (the latter pictured on the splash page), and two annoying cats. She just recently started her graduate studies at SUNY New Paltz for a MA in Mental Health Counseling. She does, however, still play music here and there, and plans to record a children's album someday, among other things, once she sleeps more than five hours in a row. We had a blast. We were a bit rusty, but somehow it all came back to us. Especially "I Feel Love" - wow! And thanks for Brown Wilson, I did not lose my necklace in my cleavage. |
